In Germany – ALFRED ROSENBERG, the chief Nazi theoretician, writes –

 Untersturmfuhrer KARL ADOLF EICHMANN is sent from Germany to Palestine with HERBERT HAGEN to assess moving Jews there from Germany.
They meet with the leader of the Jewish Haganah in Cairo, Egypt, who tries to convince them to support Jewish emigration to Palestine, but on their return they recommend against the idea as it would allow a concentrated Jewish state. (See 1957).

January 30: In the Reichstag, Germany – HITLER is saluted:

12: In Germany – The city of Nuremberg presents a first edition of Martin Luther's anti-Semitic treatise "On the Jews and their Lies" to JULIUS STREICHER, editor of the Nazi newspaper Der Stürmer, as a gift on his birthday.

15: In Germany – Jews may no longer be awarded doctoral degrees.
18: In Germany – Jews are banned from practicing as pharmacists.

France – The Jewish subsection of the Communist Party is abolished, indicating that the party is not concerned with Jewish affairs unless it is in the interest of the Soviet Union.

South Africa – Widespread anti-Jewish feeling prompts the United Party government to pass the Aliens Act to prevent large-scale German-Jewish immigration.
Parliamentary opposition leader Dr. DF MALAN (future prime minister of a National Party government from 1948), gives support for fascism among Afrikaners, blaming the Jew for all troubles of the nation.
HENDRICK VERWOERD, editor of the newspaper 'Die Transvaler' (and future Prime Minister) writes a long article on 'The Jewish question from the National Party viewpoint' (Die Joodse kwessie uit die NP se oogpunt), commenting that "the Jews have a stranglehold on the survival of the Afrikaner".
The Afrikaans newspaper, Die Burger, denies that German Jews are being persecuted.

2: Amelia Mary Earhart lands in the Marshall Islands in the Pacific with her navigator Noonan in their Lockheed Electra airplane. They are never seen again, and speculation predominates that they crashed, but more probably were

imprisoned by the Japanese forces on allegations of espionage, and die in custody.

Wednesday 7: In China – Imperial Japan attacks Beijing initiating its invasion of China.

Britain – Lord PEEL's report concludes that co-operation between Palestinians and Jews in a Palestinian State is impossible (to the dismay of Palestinians), and recommends the partition of Palestine (that is, the creation of a Jewish State), which would require radical movements of population. (See May 1939). The Peel Report, based on the rapid growth of orange groves in mainly Arab Palestine, estimates that for the 30 million crates of winter oranges by which the world consumption would rise in the following decade, the producing and exporting countries would be as follows:

20: Jewish terrorists attack Palestinian-Arab civilian buses in Palestine.

In Syria – Unofficial representatives of Arab states meet and completely reject PEEL's proposals (See July). The publication of the Peel Report in Palestine is followed by intensified Palestinian terrorism and violence.
Britain therefore outlaws the Arab High Committee, and arrests and exiles its leading members. Syria becomes the base for continuing Palestinian Arab rebellion.

27: In Germany – Jewish women may not receive fertility treatment.

Rome – Pope PIUS XI and his German Bishops issue an encyclical condemning Nazism, but not its Anti-Semitism.

In Nanking (Nanjing), capital of China – Japanese troops capture the city, and in the following six weeks soldiers of the Imperial Japanese Army murder Chinese civilians and disarm combatants numbering an estimated 40,000 to over 300,000, and perpetrate widespread rape and looting.

One third of the city is burned due to arson as many government buildings and civilian homes are torched.

In the USA – American Jews organise a rally calling for a boycott of Nazi Germany –

In the USA – 19 Nazi summer camps and family retreats are run across the United States, from New York to California, sponsored by the Deutsche-Amerikanische Berufsgemeinschaft, DAB, or German-American Bund.

The camps are set up to indoctrinate children and adults with Nazi ideology.

In Germany – Dr. KARL HANNEMAN writes in the Zeitschrift Des Deutschen Arztebundes (Journal of the German Medical Association),

France – LOUIS DARQUIER (DE PELLEPOIX) receives funding from Nazi Germany for both his anti-Jewish organization Le Rassemblement Antijuif de France and his new anti-Jewish newspaper La France Enchainée ('defence organizations against Jewish invasion'). (See August 26, 1920; and May 1942).

11: In Austria – The Austrian National Socialist Party (Austrian Nazi Party) takes power in a well planned coup d’etat and transfers power to Germany.
Psychiatrist VIKTOR FRANKL is prohibited from treating "Aryan" patients due to his Jewish identity.

Austria – Illegal convoys begin to ship Jewish immigrants to Palestine (See September 1939).

Austrian crowds jeer at Jewish men, women and children as they are forced to scrub streets in their best clothes, and then stand over them and urinate on their heads.

In Evian, France – The Intergovernmental Conference on the Refugee Problem (initiated by US President FD ROOSEVELT) generally expresses a total lack of responsibility for the Jewish refugee problem. The exclusion from the agenda of the question of Jewish immigration to Palestine is a condition of participation in the conference.
6: In Germany – Numerous commercial careers are forbidden to Jews, including estate agency, and credit broking.
27: In Germany – Streets named after Jews must be renamed.

18: In Germany – Jewish men are required to take 'Israel' and Jewish women 'Sara', as their middle names, on all official documents.

Britain and France agree to Germany annexing German-speaking Czech territory, at the Munich Conference. As a consequence all Jews are expelled from Sudetenland.
26: In Germany – Jewish burials may only take place in Jewish cemeteries.
27: In Germany – Jewish lawyers may only act on behalf of Jews.

In Germany – HITLER (Germany), MUSSOLINI (Italy), CHAMBERLAIN (Britain) and DALADIER (France) meet in Munich.

30: In Germany – Jewish doctors' licences to practice are revoked.

5: In Germany – Passports of all Jewish-Germans must now be marked with a 'J' (for 'Jude', 'Jew' in German).

In despair over the Palestinian conflict, the British government appoints a new commission under Sir JOHN WOODHEAD to reconsider the recommendations of the Peel Commission Report (see July 1937), which proposes a reduction of the Jewish area of Palestine to 1,000 square kilometres around Tel Aviv (the only area where Jews are a majority).

Both Jews and Palestinians reject the proposals. (See February 1939).

– In response to the developing situation in Nazi-ruled Germany, Parliament's House of Commons approves that children under 17 may enter Britain provided that they have a place to stay and a warranty of £50 is deposited for their eventual return to their own country, but the Dutch government officially closes its borders to any Jewish refugees, and the border guards (marechaussee) actively search for them and return any found to Germany, despite the horrors of Kristallnacht being well known.

Czechoslovakia – NICHOLAS WERTHEIM (WINTON), a stockbroker in London, born 1909 of German-Jewish Christian parents, while on holiday from Britain, begins to send Jewish children by train/rail to Britain, via the ferry from Hook of Holland (De Hoek), as a refuge –

eventually rescuing 669 mostly Jewish children from Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia on eight trains across four countries,
with some other forms of transport also set up from Vienna.
His team persuaded British custom officials to allow all the children in despite incomplete documentation.

He organises foster families for Jewish children in Britain, placing adverts in newspapers.

is knighted by the British Queen in March 2003. He dies in 2015 peacefully in his sleep at Wexham Hospital, Slough, UK, aged 106 with his daughter Barbara and two grandchildren at his side.

3: In Germany – Jews are banned from driving, and a compulsory 'aryanisation' of Jewish businesses is imposed.

Jerusalem, Palestine – A group of Orthodox religious Jews form 'Neturei Karta' (נטורי קרתא), in opposition to the politicising of Zionism into a secular ideology and its attempts to assert Jewish sovereignty in Ottoman-controlled Palestine.

In France – Virulently anti-Jewish weekly newspaper, Gringoire, owned by HORACE DE CARBUCCIA and  directed by HENRI BÉRAUD, enjoys a circulation of about 650,000, admires MUSSOLINI and FRANCO, and promotes appeasement with HITLER.

Palestine – One of Irgun's commanding officers, ABRAHAM STERN, leaves the parent organization and forms the 'Stern Gang', numbering some 200 to 300 dangerous fanatics, and Haganah (including MOSHE DAYAN), and blows up the Iraqi oil pipeline near Haifa.

Jerusalem – Jewish terrorists blow up the Post Office.

In Britain – The government confers separately with Palestinian Jews and Arabs in London to find a solution to the ongoing conflict between them. (See November 1938).

15: In Germany – Jews caught trying to emigrate illegally are to be sent to concentration camps.

29: In Athens – Mossad LeAliyah Bet is founded to smuggle Jews to Palestine, known as Aliyah Bet ('עלייה ב) and also as Ha'apala, although it had actually begun operations in 1938.

In Britain – The government issues a White Paper rejecting partition of Palestine into either a Jewish or a Palestinian Arab state, and envisages the establishment of an independent 'Palestine State' within ten years.
Jewish immigration is to be limited to a total of 75,000 persons over the next five years when a total halt on immigration is to be imposed unless agreed to by the Palestinian Arab population, Palestinian Jews and Arabs are to be invited to share increasingly in the administration, and transfers of land from Jews to Arabs is to be subject to restrictions of the High Commissioner.
Both Palestinian Arabs and Jews reject the proposal but it brings calm to the situation, although both Jewish and Arab extremists continue their anti-British wars.

23: In Germany – The Council for the Defence of the Reich decides in principle to turn all detainees into a labour force.

29: In Palestine – Jewish terrorists attack Palestinian-Arab civilian buses again, bringing the death toll to 24.

the USA – A group of Hungarian scientists including émigré physicist Leó Szilárd attempt to alert Washington of ongoing Nazi atomic bomb research. The group's warnings are discounted. Albert Einstein and Szilárd, along with other refugees such as Edward Teller and Eugene Wigner, "regard it as their responsibility to alert Americans to the possibility that German scientists might win the race to build an atomic bomb, and to warn that Hitler would be more than willing to resort to such a weapon."

In the USA – Jewish Alexander Sachs (Vice President of the Jewish 'Lehman Corporation') arrives at President Roosevelt's office with a letter from Albert Einstein recommending the development of the atomic bomb.

20: In Geneva, Switzerland – At the 21st Zionist Congress one of the leaders of American Jewry opposes immigration from Germany to Palestine on the grounds that –

Germany and the Soviet Union sign a non-aggression treaty (the Hitler-Stalin Pact) negotiated by German foreign minister Joachim von Ribbentrop and Soviet foreign minister Vyacheslav Molotov. (Later, during the post-war Nuremberg trials Stalin tried to blot out his alliance with Hitler from the record – with full support of his British and American allies).

In Austria – Since March 1938 to now, c.17,000 illegal Jewish immigrants have been shipped to Palestine, assisted by a Jewish Viennese financier BERTHOLD STORFER (as an agent of EICHMANN) who had been a non-Zionist Jewish representative at the Intergovernmental Conference on the Refugee Problem held July 1938 in Evian.

Germany invades Poland. (Great Britain and France declare war on the German Reich two days later).

In Germany – HITLER orders the murder of incurably insane Jews. He writes to KARL BRANDT –

After the receipt of this order, an organization is set up to execute this program, Karl Brandt headed the medical section and Philipp Bouhler, the administrative section. Hoven, as chief surgeon of the Buchenwald concentration camp, took part in the program and personally ordered the transfer of at least 300 to 400 Jewish inmates of different nationalities, mostly non-German, to their death in the euthanasia station at Bernburg.
All Jews may not leave their homes after 8 PM (9 PM in summer).

In Gadnask/Danzig, Poland – German SS troops and local police attacked the Polish post office on Hevelius Plaza. Most Jews had already left the city
3: Germany declares war on Czechoslovakia, after having previously expelled all Jews from Czechoslovakia's Sudetenland, and closes the country to escaping Jews. .
In Germany – On HITLER's behalf GÖRING secretly (via DAHLERUS) offers Britain, among others, to stop the persecution of Jews if Britain will stay out of the war.

last train of Briton NICHOLAS WINTON's Jewish children, being evacuated to Britain at midnight, is barred from leaving Prague. The children are eventually shipped to Auschwitz for extermination.

Kozielewski) is called up for military duty when Germany invades Poland. He manages to escape when his unit is captured by the Soviets (avoiding the fate of other Polish officers killed in the Katyn massacre in the spring of 1940). Karski twice infiltrates the Warsaw Ghetto, and also poses as a guard at the Izbica transit camp, where he witnesses Jews being herded onto train cars bound for their deaths.
As he recountes in “Story of a Secret State,” a report of his wartime experiences published in 1944, he joins the Polish underground and works as a courier bringing information to and from the Polish government in exile. At one point, he is betrayed to the Gestapo and attempts to commit suicide while in custody. He survives, and comrades arrange for his escape.

Having witnessed Nazi atrocities against the Jews, he provides eyewitness accounts to British foreign secretary Anthony Eden, US president Franklin D. Roosevelt, and US Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter.

He urges them to take action, including bombing the railroads leading to the death camps, but his message falls on deaf ears.

17: The Red Army marches into Eastern Poland.

20: In Germany – Any radios found in Jewish homes are to be confiscated.

21: In Poland – The first of the Judenräte (Jewish Councils) is established by order of Nazi leader Reinhard Heydrich. The Jewish Councils established by Germany in their occupied territories were very useful to the Nazi's in the registration of all Jews for deportation and control purposes.

In Germany – HITLER personally authorizes the T4 Programme, the 'mercy killing' of persons with mental or physical disabilities. (See 1941).
7: In Germany – HITLER appoints HEINRICH HIMMLER as head of a new organization: the Reich Commissariat for the Strengthening of the German Nation. Poles and Jews are to be deported from annexed territories and replaced with Germans.
9: HIMMLER decrees that 550,000 out of the 650,000 Jews from the conquered territories are to be sent east of the Vistula in a ruthless mid-winter expulsion. More than a million Poles are also deported within a year.

Germany – HEINRICH MÜLLER becomes the head of Germany's Gestapo secret police. (Müller occupies a position in the Nazi hierarchy between Himmler, the overall head of the Nazi police apparatus and the chief architect of the plan to exterminate the Jews of Europe, and Eichmann, the man entrusted with arranging the deportations of Jews to the eastern ghettoes and death camps. His chief responsibility is police work within Germany, and is fully in charge and thus responsible to execute the extermination of the Jews of Europe.)

8: In Munich, Germany – ADOLF HITLER mocks his international enemies in his annual speech, and boasts of Germany's successful start to the war.

Hitler leaves early, and a bomb planted by Georg Elser to assassinate Hitler explodes 13-minutes later, causing eight deaths, massive damage, and collapsing the ceiling just above where Hitler had been standing.

The Nazi newspaper, the Voelkischer Beobachter, later calls the event "the miraculous salvation of the Fuehrer".

19: In Poland – 380 Jews are shot dead at Ostro.
In France – The Jewish population of Paris reaches 200,000, half of whom are immigrants/refugees and strongly resented by French Jews.
In Germany – American journalist LOTHROP STODDARD observes that Nazis frequently raise a toast at dinners to 'Sterban Juden!' – May the Jews Die!.

Hof, northern Bavaria, Germany – The Christus church is inaugurated with a painting of HITLER standing imperially in a scene of Jesus Christ in ministry.
