The Security of a True Believer
Much has been said and written on the eternal security of the Christian believer that does not follow from Holy Scripture.
This comes largely from the fear that if, after Christian conversion, a believer cannot be eternally lost (damned), under any circumstance, it would be a licence to sin and would thus destroy the very character of Christianity.
The evidence of conversion
is not doctrine.
It is a new nature!
This fear shows a serious ignorance of both the Bible and of the work of the Spirit of God in the life of every true believer.
1. The Capacity of the Cross –
How much sin did Christ atone for?
"For our sake He [God the Father] made Him [Jesus] to be sin [sin itself, not sins] who knew no sin,
so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.
2 Corinthians 5:21.
There is no limit on the value of what God did in Christ's atonement! But this does not apply except, through faith/trust in God, into a repentant heart.
2. Regeneration by the Holy Spirit –
What happened when I became a Christian?
The Holy Spirit may convict the world of sin (guilt), but He does much more than this with those who surrender their hearts to God. The Bible says that the new life which God gave in the resurrection of Jesus Christ was for all those who believe.
"But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ – by grace you have been saved – and raised us up with Him and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages He might show the immeasurable riches of His grace
in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus."
Ephesians 2:4-7.
essence of this new life is a change in the spirit of the believer, every believer. God gave this newness to us in the resurrection of Jesus and is as complete as our new status before God – expressed as "seated us with Him in the heavenly places".
Therefore –
Although there are many fake Christians, the truly so-called 'born again' believer is as secure spiritually as if he or she were in Heaven already.
"No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God's seed abides in him,
and he cannot keep on sinning because he has been born of God."
1 John 3:9.
evidence of this security-in-Christ is the changed heart expressed specifically in relation to God's people.
"We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers." 1 John 3:14.
Remember then: "I write these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you.
But the Anointing that you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you.
But as His Anointing
[the Holy Spirit's presence] teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie --
just as it has taught you, abide in Him."

1 John 2:26-27.
Fear of punishment may curtail evil behaviour, but it certainly does not produce righteousness.
