The Empathy of God
"...He said, 'Where have you laid him?' They said to Him, 'Lord, come and see.'
Jesus wept. So the Jews said, 'See how He loved him!' But some of them said,
'Could not He who opened the eyes of the blind man also have kept this man from dying?'
Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb."
John 11:34-38
In other words
– 'if Jesus cared so much, why did He not do something about it?'
Martha, the busy sister of Lazarus, felt the same way –
"Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died."
– for Jesus had not come when they had called Him!
John 11:21.
The Bible
even tells us that Christ's lack of response to her family's crisis call was deliberate
"...when He heard that Lazarus was ill, He stayed two days longer in the place where He was"
John 11:6.
'wept' ...'deeply move again', could this be just hypocritical acting? (It does happen at funerals)
NO, not from Jesus who regarded hypocrisy as the worst of sins.
  What then?
The Lord
Jesus Christ's favourite reference to Himself was the term 'son of man'. He used it repeatedly of Himself, for it was a common semitic idiom for 'human'*, and this was His mission – to 'walk in our shoes' sinlessly, to fulfil the original commission of Adam to be the "image of God", the representative within Creation of the character of the Creator. For that reason alone the human race was given authority in the beginning – to subdue and to rule over it all.
Genesis 1:26.
*Bible 'scholars' who claim that this term comes from Daniel 7:13, do not deserve the term 'scholar' for that idea conflicts with both the Hebrew language and with the literary context of Daniel itself.
empathy with the grief-stricken family of Lazarus was a full-hearted empathy that represented the feelings of God!
So why did He not just stop the tragedy from happening in the first place?
Because we are part of something bigger than ourselves – with consequences that go on forever and ever!
This is
why, He who knows the future, let's bad things happen to good people. God does not need to test! He does not experiment with us! He allows circumstance to arise for us to learn to respond and grow into the stature mandated to Adam and demonstrated in Jesus – of directly reflecting the character of God to the world around us.
Our destiny is higher than Heaven! It is to be like Him who made all things!
is why Jesus was disappointed, when His disciples woke Him up because the fishing boat they were in was sinking. He had hoped that they had learned something from Him by that stage in following Him.
"Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?"
Mark 4:40 ESV.
Refusal to be intimidated by any circumstance was (for Jesus) a necessary part of simply being human!
Therefore, Jesus knew, it was necessary for bad things to be allowed into our circumstances . . .
in God needs exercise! Faith is not a happy feeling. Faith is not a passive expectation that things will improve..!
Faith addresses issues – as Jesus addressed the wind and the waves!
Faith  reacts  according  to  its  knowledge  of  God!
this reason Jesus spent so much time in worshipful prayer...
Matt.14:23; Mk.6:46;
Lk.5:16; 6:12; 11:1; 18:1...
Not to 'become holy', but as a real human being – to fully know God's thinking, God's attitude, God's wisdom – for everything He encountered daily...

Come!  Climb into the arms of God!  They are extended to you!  You do not need to know 'how'.  He hears!
