Politics of a Seduced Bride
Paul defined his work among Christians as being to present them "as a pure virgin to Christ"
2 Corinthians 11:2.
This New
Testament perspective of the relationship between Christ and His people, as a Groom to his Bride, emphasizes its absolute exclusivity in character and innd accountability:
"'Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'.
This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church
Ephesians 5:31-32
However, the history of Christianity repeatedly demonstrates espousals of Christ's church to the authorities of this world for the sake of influence.
For Christianity, keeping doctrinal exclusivity was not a major problem, but maintaining the exclusivity of Christianity's character in relation to the structures and authority of the societies in which Christianity became influential certainly was and still is a problem today.
More twisting of the character of Christianity, and consequent persecution of Bible believing Christians who stood apart from this, has occurred in Christian history from church denominations becoming state churches and/or by using state machinery for their purposes, than any other single source of infidelity.
Crimes of 'Babylon the Great'!
shocking demonstration of the criminally foolish nature of this behaviour, in spite of its seductive promise of greater influence in society, occurred in the fourth century of our Christian era.
A Serious Lesson for the
American Church today!
From about the year 339 until the year 379 AD, a terrible systematic massacre of Christians took place in Parthia (worse than any persecution that had ever occurred under pagan Rome) as a direct result of the Christian church's flirtation with the authority of Rome within its empire. About 401 AD the historian Sozomen wrote that the number of the victims was 'beyond enumeration', but some have estimated it at about 190,000.
Great Bloodshed Caused
How could this horror happen?
Rome became Christian in the eyes of its old imperial enemy Parthia (previously a Christian refuge from Rome's persecutions), Parthia now turned anti-Christian and the years of the great terror began. Parthia believed it could not afford any Rome-friendly religious fifth-column in its midst. Although various ruses were set up by Parthia to justify its actions, the motivation came from Christianity's identification with the rule of Rome.
is always a price to pay, somewhere, for Christianity's flirtation with secular authority.
The Church
Today, there is no lack of identification of the Christian church with the agencies of secular authority. It is seductively useful and socially profitably to do so – and therefore seems so right . . . with tragically corrupting influences.
The machinery of imperialism in every age has always sought to use the dominant religion to strengthen its position. But Christianity has no country. It has no home in this world! It is meant to represent the Creator of all mankind and therefore cannot espouse itself to any secular identity, no matter how seductively promising its prospect may be.
the blindness of many evangelical Christians to this, in the USA in particular, has seriously damaged the witness of the Christian Church in some dominantly Muslim countries, and will continue to do so until the Church is sanctified from its adultery with this world, even if that world claims to be based on Judeo-Christian principles.

Proverbs 23:1-3
The Bible warns every believer –
"When you sit down to eat with a ruler, observe carefully what is before you,
and put a knife to your throat if you are given to appetite. Do not desire his delicacies, for they are deceptive food
